Lipedema is frequently mistaken for obesity or ordinary lymphedema, and many people are told for years that they simply need to lose weight. It is a distinct condition, it is not caused by overeating, and it does not respond to dieting the way ordinary fat does.
What it typically looks like
- Symmetrical enlargement of both legs, and often the arms
- The feet and hands are usually spared, so there is a visible cuff at the ankle
- Tenderness and easy bruising
- A disproportionate lower body compared with the upper body
- Little change from weight loss in the affected areas
What we can do

We cannot cure lipedema and we will not tell you otherwise. What treatment does is reduce pain and heaviness, manage any fluid component, slow progression, and protect the limb from developing secondary lymphedema on top of it.
That means gentle manual lymphatic drainage, compression fitted properly for lipedema rather than generic garments, movement that suits the condition, and honest conversation about what to expect.
Being believed
Most people arrive having been dismissed somewhere else. The assessment starts by taking the symptoms seriously and explaining what is actually happening.
